What is EFT?

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), also known as “tapping” is an alternative treatment founded by Gary Craig back in the 1990's that helps to relieve unwanted emotions and physical symptoms. It has been used successfully by people all over the world to help with issues such as pain, anxiety, weight loss, phobias, trauma, allergies, illness and depression, but it can also be used to enhance sports performance and increase personal success. EFT is performed by stimulating acupuncture or acupressure points on the body called meridians by tapping on them with the fingertips. It is a painless process “without the needles”. It is a simple technique that anyone can learn and apply on themselves anytime!

The Science Behind EFT

Before we go in depth about how EFT helps I would first like to talk a little bit more about emotions and how they affect our physical bodies:

Emotions are released as chemicals from the brain

Discovered by the famous Neuroscientist Candace B. Pert, when we experience an emotion as a result from some external event, trauma, etc. our brain releases a cascade of chemicals called peptides throughout the body. Peptides are a short chain of amino acids produced by nerve cells in the brain that lock into receptors, which are proteins on cell membranes. Each unique peptide carries its own emotional information. For example, if you’re feeling energized you create one peptide, such as endorphin and if you’re stressed you create another peptide, such as cortisol. When the peptide connects with the receptor, the receptor can then send a signal into the cell interior with specific instructions to be carried out by the cell. It can have positive or negative effects depending on the peptide. The peptides are created based on our emotions thus, have a direct impact on our physical state and all the systems in our body such as the immune system.

“My research has shown me that when emotions are expressed – which is to say that the biochemicals that are the substrate of an emotions are flowing freely – all systems are united and made whole.  When emotions are suppressed, denied, not allowed to be whatever they may be,  our network pathways get blocked, stopping the flow of the vital feel-good unifying chemicals that run both our biology and our behavior.  This, I believe is the state of unhealed feeling I believe we want so desperately to escape from."  (Pert, 273)

How does EFT help?

EFT (or tapping) speaks directly to your body and completes the processing of the  chemicals out of the cell receptors, returning your body to a state of balance. These emotional chemicals dump into your waste system and are eliminated. The body will start to heal from physical pain and illnesses once we clear the our minds of the negative emotions using tapping.

“The body and the mind are not separate, and we cannot treat one without the other.  My research has shown me that the body can and must be healed through the mind, and the mind can and must be healed through the body.”  (Pert, 274)
